Happy Sunday, Rotarians!
I’m excited to be putting together my first Weekly Newsletter, and there’s much to share this week, so please take a moment to read about several important, upcoming events/opportunities, including this week’s speaker, supporting homeless veterans, and the upcoming WASH Symposium. Details are below.
This week’s speaker is our District Governor, Tamara Fennell, who will be speaking about a topic that’s near and dear to us all, “Rotary, An Expression of Who We Are.” This will be a more conversational and interactive presentation, which should make for a fun evening! Club members are strongly encouraged to attend, as we’re lucky to have Tamie joining us – and an interactive discussion is that much more robust with more in attendance. We’ll see you all this coming Wednesday!
Opportunity to support homeless veterans:
Last week, Gail Sharp from Tallgrass Spa and Salon spoke to our club about a community wide event that Tallgrass has spearheaded for the last three years to help Homeless Veterans in Colorado. Gail has been kind enough to provide more detailed information so we can all contribute in as beneficial a way as possible.
Donations will help pack 400 bags with toiletries and underwear that have been requested by the Bill Daniels Veteran's Center in Denver.
Only the items on the list below are needed for each pack:
1 SMALL pack wet wipes
1 travel hand sanitizer
1 SMALL bar of soap
1 comb
1 razor and small shave cream
1 SMALL bottle of water
1 each hand and foot warmer
1 lip balm
1 stick deodorant
1 toothpaste and brush pack
1 men's underwear (sm. or med.)
1 each of hand and foot warmers
NO FULL-SIZE products and NO SOCKS.
Important note from Gail: Over the past 2 years, we've received too many bars of soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. We typically run out of hand and foot warmers, underwear, and notes of encouragement. Notes from children are especially wonderful! More of these items please!
Please include a card or note to the homeless veteran you’ll be helping support, thanking them for their service, wishing them well, and any other kindness you’d like to share. As you can imagine, most of these veterans are lonely and struggling.
There is tub to collect items at your Rotary meetings until November 6th. Even better, feel free to drop your items inside the front door at Wild Game. They have been so wonderful to donate their facility for collection, sorting, and packing!
If you'd like to contribute but don't have time to shop, we will accept cash donations. The backpacks are about $1 each.
Please come help sort items into bins on November 7 at 5:30 pm and pack the backpacks at 8:30 am on November 8. Both events are at Wild Game.
The WASH Symposium
The WASH Symposium is scheduled for Saturday, October 19 at the CSU SPUR Hydro Building. We have a great line up of Speakers and we are especially excited about hosting William Kamkwamba, author of “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” and the subject of a 2019 movie of the same title. You can also hear from Erica Gwynn, our Rotary International WASH Area of Focus Manager, Lizz Welch from iDE as well as our 8 breakout speakers.
You will receive a flyer about this event with more information.
